The camera company on the back of a football helmet

The Vienna Vikings ran out for their last regular-season game in August with spot.ai on their helmets. Fifteen days later they were champions of Europe.

The clip is 16 seconds long. The Vienna Vikings are in the tunnel under the Wiener Sport-Club stadium on the evening of August 22, helmets on, bouncing, and the club's social team is filming from behind. The caption on X reads "Say WHO?! Say WHO?! Ready to hit the field." The nearest helmet turns toward the phone. Above the padding, in white, it says spot.ai. The jersey under it reads 89, tight end Florian Bierbaumer, back on the field that week.

I have watched a lot of our logo placements. Trade-show banners, booth walls, the side of a demo kiosk. This is the first one that runs a 40-yard dash.

The game

The Vikings beat the Firenze Red Lions that night in front of 4,172 people and finished the regular season 11-1, the best record in the league and the number one seed. Wide receiver Philipp Haun caught two touchdowns and was named the league's player of the week. The defense had seven sacks, and Franklin Jr. returned an interception for a score.

The club's own match report quotes head coach Chris Calaycay: "Wir wollten den Grunddurchgang mit einem Sieg beenden und uns das nötige Selbstvertrauen für die Playoffs holen. Das ist uns gelungen." We wanted to finish the regular season with a win and take the confidence we needed into the playoffs. That worked.

It was the sixth and last home game of the season. The club counted 31,715 fans across those six, one at the Generali-Arena and five at the Sport-Club ground the team moved into this year.

Fifteen days later

On September 6 the Vikings played the Panthers Wrocław in the Gold Bowl at the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena in Duisburg and won 68 to 5. Quarterback Ben Holmes threw six touchdown passes and was named MVP. Amani Dennis intercepted two passes and ran one back. The club's report puts it plainly: "Die Vienna Vikings sind der erste Champion der AFLE und holen den europäischen Titel zurück nach Wien." The Vikings are the first champions of the new league, and the European title is back in Vienna.

So the helmet in the tunnel belongs to a champion. We did not plan that part.

Why a camera company is on a helmet

Spot AI is a San Francisco company that turns the cameras a business already owns into AI co-workers, which is a strange thing to put on sports equipment. Neither the club nor Spot AI has written a press release about it. The sticker is the announcement.

There is a practical side, though. A stadium is a building full of cameras with a crowd of thousands that arrives and leaves in the same forty minutes. The questions a stadium operator asks are the same ones a warehouse or a school asks: which gate is backing up, where did that incident happen, was the concourse clear when the doors opened, and who saw it first. Every venue we have walked through already has the cameras. What it usually lacks is anything watching them.

If you run a venue and want to know what your cameras could be doing between kickoffs, we would like to talk. And if you are a Vikings fan who spotted the sticker before we posted about it, you were quicker than most of our team.
