From 'search and scrub' to 'talks the person down': five years of one video vendor's mailers

Read in order, Spot AI's customer mailers from 2021 to July 2026 show a product that shipped search first, analytics second, an assistant third and agents last. The page where people look at cameras got rebuilt the whole way through.

I read all twenty-five of them in one sitting, from a July 2021 usage report to a July 2026 note about fire detection. Mailers are written to sell, so you discount the adjectives. What is harder to fake is the order in which things ship, and the words a company reaches for once it has shipped them.

2021 to 2022: search and sharing

The earliest mailer in the archive, dated 4 August 2021, is a per-customer usage report. It mentions "our free (yes, free) cameras" and a new feature called Maps for finding cameras. The product at that point was cameras as the way in and search as the reason to stay.

The April 2022 mobile app announcement lists what the app lets you do: "search and scrub for video footage, build cases, and share your most important clips." Push notifications and phone-book sharing are the headline additions. Nothing in the mailer decides anything on its own.

Search shipped first because it is the feature a buyer can verify in a demo. Cambridge, Maryland, is credited in the June 2024 roundup with having "Reduced time to find footage from 2 hours to 30 seconds," and that kind of number was the sales argument for years before any agent existed.

2022 to mid-2024: analytics, then integrations

The first step beyond search is the September 2022 mailer on Vehicle Idle Time and People Presence, filed under an "Intelligence" tab. These are counts and dwell times, sold as operations data for car washes and warehouses. Nobody calls them AI.

The monthly roundup begins in December 2023 with Attribute Search and People Search, plus two-way audio so a user can "project audio out of speaker-equipped cameras." In hindsight the audio matters: it is the first time the product can act on a scene, even if a human is doing the talking.

Through 2024 the roundups fill up with plumbing: Custom Roles in January, LPR improvements in February, an Early Access Program with slip-and-fall detection and Active Directory in March, the Kisi access-control integration and Fisheye, PTZ and 4K cameras in June, Omnilert gun detection and case templates in July, a multisensor camera in August. The Omnilert note of 23 July 2024 is the first mailer in which a detection triggers something automatically: "Spot AI activates Omnilert's automated emergency notification system." The model was Omnilert's; the pipes were Spot's.

December 2023 to August 2024: the assistant

In the middle of all that, on 19 December 2023, comes Copilot 1.1, and the language turns. "AI Copilot is your new assistant for cameras. Today, it helps you streamline workflows like search and creating alerts and intelligence dashboards. Tomorrow, the possibilities are endless." It is gated to the Pro plan, and the mailer asks for feedback in the same breath. Copilot 1.2 follows in February 2024, "smarter and more responsive to coaching."

August 2024 adds AI Labs and text-based video search: you type a freeform query where before you picked attributes from a menu. It was still search, in plain English.

January 2025 onward: agents

There is a four-month gap in the archive after August 2024, and when the mailers resume the vocabulary has changed. The January 2025 event invite refers to "the launch of Video AI Agents in November" and previews a Remote Security Agent, described on 13 January as "a fundamental shift from passive monitoring to active deterrence, combining the power of AI with the deterrence of security guards."

From here the mailers stop listing features and start naming agents. March 2025 brings AI Agents Reporting and an Unattended Workstation Agent, with one car wash said to have "boosted membership sales by 6%." October 2025 extends the security guard to perimeters and parking lots, with strobes, floodlights and talk-downs, and the line "Spot AI Security Guard doesn't just watch, it acts." The same issue quietly adds Timelapse to the Search tab, a reminder that search never went away.

The November 2025 Wrapped issue supplies numbers: "over half a billion hours of video," "Ninety million automated actions," more than 100,000 cases, "over 2,000 AI Agents built," and a most-used agent of Missing PPE Detection. Then the line the sequence had been heading toward: "AI is no longer just a tool, but a teammate."

By July 2026 the company announces "a new class of AI Agents" that "watch for specific risk behaviors, reason about what they see, and respond instantly": Possible Fire, Cash Register Theft (in beta), and Possible Vehicle Break-in, which "talks the person down in real time." Five years after "search and scrub," the camera is doing the talking.

What kept being rebuilt

While the agents got the headlines, the pages customers actually live on got rebuilt over and over. A Devices page replacing the Maintain tab in March 2024, then a Device Management page combining the Maintain and Configure pages a month later. In March 2026, Live and Search merged into a single Cameras page with "one continuous timeline." In July 2026 the navigation moved from the top bar to a side panel, with the explanation "We're freeing up space for new, powerful features." PTZ cameras shipped in June 2024 with "Improved Player Controls"; two years later those controls were "rebuilt from scratch," with a patrol mode.

Each time the product learned to do something new (count, assist, act), the place where a human looks at cameras had to be redrawn to make room for it. The camera grid outlived every agent launch and was redesigned after each one.

One last detail. The email footer changed from "ENABLING EFFORTLESS VIDEO INTELLIGENCE FOR EVERY BUSINESS" in 2022 to "CREATE SAFER WORKPLACES AND SMARTER OPERATIONS" by late 2023, before any agent shipped. And the March 2026 issue, in a trade-show blurb, says "Spot AI doesn't replace hardware, guards, or services," and that it powers them. A company selling teammates is also reassuring the guards, and on the evidence of twenty-five mailers I would expect it to keep doing both.
